What Is Private Medical Cover?

Private Medical Cover (or PMI as it is also commonly known), is an insurance policy, which is designed to cover the policy holder, for the cost of medical expenses. This means that the insured person is not completely dependant on the NHS, and is able to receive their medical treatment privately.

The main providers of PMI in the UK are PPP Healthcare, BUPA and CIGNA although, many other insurers now provide protection of this nature.

You pay a premium to an insurance company and in turn, they provide you with healthcare benefits, designed to cover "acute conditions" if you become unwell after your policy has started.

Acute conditions are generally described as those with ability to respond quickly to treatment. The aim is to return you to the state of health you enjoyed before your illness or injury commenced.
