Chin Lift Surgery

What is Chin Lift Surgery?

A chin lift tightens the skin that starts to hang down beneath the neck as we age and gets rid of a double chin. Having this simple procedure takes years off anyone, the surgery does not take long and costs remarkably little.

Who Has Chin Lift Surgery?

People get a double chin for various reasons; most because of age, but some people develop a double chin early in life because of genetics. People who lose a lot of weight quickly are also often left with a sagging or double chin that exercise will not eliminate.

How Chin Lift Surgery Is Performed

Chin lift surgery is performed under a full anaesthetic, so you may be required to stay overnight in the clinic or hospital. If you are a healthy person, you may be allowed to go home the same day, but may feel a little groggy. The surgery takes on average 2 hours and recovery a further few hours, so you need to set aside your whole day for the surgery.

The surgeon makes an incision just under the earlobe, so that no visible scars are left. However, sometimes it is necessary for the surgeon to make a fine incision on the tip of the chin, because it is on the bottom of the chin the scar is virtually invisible after a few months.

Most of the time the surgeon only needs to stretch the skin to achieve the desired effect. If muscles need to be tightened as well, the additional incision on the chin is needed. Excess fat is removed using liposuction.

Chin lift surgery costs £1,500 - £3,000 depending on where you live and the amount of surgery and aftercare that is needed for your case.

Recovering From Chin Lift Surgery

After chin lift surgery, you have to wear a bandage for a few days and visit the clinic for a check up. The stitches are removed after a week; there will be bruising, but that will clear up after a week to 10 days. Scars will remain red for several weeks, but will gradually fade becoming invisible after 3 months.

Skin tightens as it heals, so the full effect of chin lift surgery is not achieved until healing is complete, typically 3 months. Over time, your chin will begin to drop again, but it will be 10 to 15 years before you need to repeat your chin lift surgery. A good skincare regime and neck exercises helps to make the results of chin lift surgery last longer.
